Retrofit : Volume 7 Issue 1 2018
18 • RETROFIT AUSTRALIA • VOLUME 7 NUMBER 1 | 2018 | Energy Efficiency So, it’s important that we continue to work hard to scale our impact and support the industry to become even more energy, waste and water efficient. At NABERS, 2018 will see the launch of a suite of new tools and processes that meet industry and environmental needs across sustainability in the residential sector, the accessibility of tenant ratings and commercial waste management. Here’s a closer look at what’s coming up this year: NABERS for Apartment Buildings We’re launching NABERS Energy and Water ratings into the residential sector and, with this, we hope to have the same impact that we’ve had in the commercial sector. But, as well as the environmental implications, energy and water expenses can account for up to 60 per cent of costs for owners’ corporations. NABERS for Apartment Buildings will give investors, residents, strata managing agents and building managers a better snapshot of their building’s performance so that they can identify opportunities for improvement. NABERS Co-Assess: an application process to engage tenants Business tenancies within office buildings account for about 50 per cent of that building’s energy use. We estimate that, of the buildings that have been rated with NABERS previously, there may be some 35,400 tenancies. Imagine the energy savings if even half of those tenancies were to rate with NABERS! Our new Co-Assess process will allow building owners and managers to utilise the base- and whole- building ratings that they are already undertaking and rate their tenancies at the same time. This ultimately makes it easier and more accessible for tenants to get a rating for their individual offices. A pathway to carbon-neutral buildings A building needs to offset 100 per cent of its carbon emissions to be carbon neutral. There are many Australian businesses that are working towards this ambitious target. We’ve partnered with the federal government and the Green Building Council of Australia (GBCA) to develop a pathway for these buildings to become certified as carbon neutral. The new NABERS Waste Manager Platform Commercial building managers look for ways to improve waste management, demanding transparency in the disposal and reporting of waste. So, we’ve worked with industry, government and leading businesses, like Westfield and Lendlease, to develop a platform that manages and monitors a building’s waste data. Its key features enable managers and waste companies to: • upload data on a regular basis to a user-friendly online platform • visualise and monitor real-time data through the interactive, simple dashboard • get a NABERS Waste rating online • identify opportunities to save money on waste management. So far, so good, but we’ve got a way to go NABERS developed the rating, but couldn’t have achieved the results without the contribution and investment from leaders within the commercial building sector. Smart retrofitting practice has been key to improving building performance. On behalf of NABERS, thank you to everyone who has been part of the journey and helped to: • save 826,578 tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions – enough to power 75,200 homes for one year • save $350 million in energy bills (since 2010) • provide almost 5000 certifications (since 2000).
